Michael Bedford receives poultry nutrition award

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS, U.S. — The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) honored Michael Bedford with the AFIA-Poultry Science Association (PSA) Nutrition Research Award at the PSA annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas, U.S.

“Dr. Bedford’s dedication to the feed industry through his research to improve animal performance through nutrition, as well as his involvement with the Poultry Science Association, makes him incredibly deserving of this award,” said Paul Davis, Ph.D., director of quality, animal food safety and education for the AFIA.

Bedford, the research director for AB Vista in Marlborough, Wiltshire, England, has led the development of a feed additive that combats the anti-nutrient properties of phytate, which enables livestock to extract more phosphorous, protein and energy from feed, improving production efficiency and significantly reducing pollution.

With his team, Bedford supervises more than 90 research projects each year. He has authored over 300 publications, regularly reviews articles for seven journals and works with more than 100 academics and nutritionists worldwide. He is a PSA board member and an adjunct professor at the University of New England, Australia.

Bedford has a doctorate in poultry nutrition and biochemistry and two post-doctoral positions in molecular biology and poultry nutrition from the University of Guelph in Canada and a bachelor’s degree in animal production from the University of Nottingham in England.

Janet Remus of DuPont presented the award on behalf of AFIA. The award is sponsored by AFIA as part of its ongoing awards program that dates back to 1948.
