E.U. agri-food exports maintain high value despite drop in wheat totals

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM – While E.U. agri-food exports in October maintained a high value of €12.3 billion, wheat exports saw the biggest decrease in the month with a drop of €75 million to €216 million.

Agri-food imports totaled €9.6 billion, and oilseeds and cereals (other than wheat and rice) saw a major increase of €127 million from the same month a year earlier, according to the European Commission’s latest monthly trade report.

For the 12-month period from October 2016 to October 2017, E.U. agri-food exports totaled €137.4 billion, a 5.6% increase from the same period a year earlier.

Wheat and other cereals exports saw the biggest drop in value on an annual basis, €1.8 billion and €400 million, respectively.

Major gains in annual values were seen in agri-food exports to the United States, Russia and several Asian markets, including China, Japan and Korea.

Annual export values remain down for North African and Middle East destinations, in particular Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Algeria and Morocco. Agri-food exports to Vietnam, Libya and the United Arab Emirates also went down over the last 12-month period.

Main origins for E.U. agri-food imports over the past 12 months were Brazil, the United States and Argentina followed by Ukraine, China, Indonesia, Switzerland and Turkey.
