Argentina focuses on new markets for its wheat

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA — The Argentine Wheat Institution released its wheat quality report on Jan. 6 and Argentina’s Ministry of agriculture announced that it is focusing on new markets for its wheat and improving its quality.

The import standard for medium- to low-quality wheat should contain a minimum of 12% protein on a dry basis. Argentina’s wheat averaged 10.5% protein in the 2014-15 season and 11.4% protein in the previous season.  

The low quality wheat is due to infertile soil and inadequate crop rotation, the report stated. Argentina is offering a relief measure tax on fertilizers in an effort to alleviate the infertile soil.

The country expects to produce 10.9 million tonnes of wheat in the 2015-16 season.
