IGP Institute to offer bulk solids course

MANHATTAN, KANSAS, U.S. — The IGP Institute is planning the Bulk Solids Handling, Storage and Flow course for Oct. 27–30 at the IGP Conference Center.
“The investment the bulk solids industry has made in our facilities and programs, and the faculty expertise we have on-board at KSU, make for a winning public-private partnership effort,” said Dirk Maier, department head of Grain Science and Industry at Kansas State University (KSU).
Participants will learn about the science and engineering of bulk solids from KSU and industry experts in practical classroom and hands-on sessions. Bulk solids handling and flow equipment are located in the state-of-the-art Hal Ross Flour Mill and O.H. Kruse Feed Technology Innovation Center. The visit will also include an on-site visit to a bulk solids handling equipment manufacturer.
“This course benefits the industry by allowing participants to fortify their skills and also understand the latest technology from the equipment industry,” said Carlos Campabadal, program specialist in grain storage and feed manufacturing at KSU.
The course covers topics such as bulk solid particle and bulk properties, powder sampling, solids conveying mechanisms, powder/grain mixing and blending, flow properties of bulk solids, common flow problems, segregation in powders, caking of bulk solids, health effects of fine powders, and dust explosion hazards.
Course instructor and grain science faculty member, Kingsly Ambrose said, “The training focuses on understanding the bulk and particle characteristics of granular materials, which helps in delivering a uniform granular product to the consumer.”
