Former AIB cereal chemist dies

MANHATTAN, KANSAS, U.S. — Karel Kulp, a former cereal chemist at AIB International, died Sept. 12. He was 93. 

Born in Olomouc, Czechoslovakia to a family that operated sugar and yeast facilities, Kulp moved to the U.S. in 1947 to study distillation technology in order to bring it back to the family business. But, following the 1948 Czech communist coup d’état, his family advised him to remain in the U.S. 

Kulp later joined the American Institute of Baking in Chicago, Illinois, U.S., and then moved along with the AIB to Manhattan, Kansas, U.S., in 1977. He remained at the AIB until 1988, at which point he was director of cereal chemistry research. 

He was a fellow of the American Association of Cereal Chemists and following his retirement remained active through writing, editing and/or co-editing several books on cereal chemistry. 

Survivors include his wife, Vlasta; two sons, Thomas (Kristen) and Charles (Eva); and three grandchildren, Patrick, Katherine and Adam.
