WASHINGTON, D.C., U.S. — The U.S. Grains Council (USGC) said on Aug. 25 that it took its “DDGS Use in Poultry Road Show” to nutritionists, feed mill managers and quality control staff across Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia this summer to provide technical training and encourage distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) users to optimize inclusion rates.

“The program highlighted the cost saving factors that come from DDGS use in poultry and DDGS’ safety from mycotoxin problems,” said Adel Yusupov, USGC regional director in Southeast Asia.

The highest demand for DDGS in Southeast Asia currently comes from the poultry sector, he said, noting that U.S. DDGS exports to the region have increased 18% since 2010.

The “Road Show” is just one component of the council’s ongoing DDGS promotion in the region. Council staff have also completed one-on-one technical consultations with several integrated feed milling companies, including Sinmah and GymTech in Malaysia; Panca Patriot, Wonokoyo, Japfa Comfeed and Sierad Produce in Indonesia; and Betagro in Thailand.

“One-on-one meetings continue to be the most effective way to educate customers and convince them to use DDGS,” said Yusupov.

Meanwhile, the council’s technical consultant in the Philippines has made more than 30 customer visits, including visits in Vietnam and the Philippines, to promote DDGS use in swine and poultry, and council efforts have contributed to a decision by Romar Commodities to extend its DDGS marketing efforts into the Philippines’ Mindanao region.

Further DDGS technical visits are scheduled for Vietnam at the end of August, for Thailand in mid-September, and for Malaysia and Indonesia in early October, and a DDGS marketing mission to New Zealand is on the calendar for October.
