January U.S. all wheat at $7.40 a bushel

WASHINGTON, D.C., U.S. — The preliminary national average price received by U.S. farmers for all wheat in January was $7.40 per bushel, up 95¢ from $6.45 in December and up $2.50 from $4.90 in January 2010, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Agricultures Prices report on Feb. 3.

The average price paid for winter wheat in January was $7.23 a bushel, up 83¢ from $6.40 in December and up $2.56 from $4.67 in January 2010. The average price paid for durum was $7.17 per bushel, up $1.10 from $6.07 in December and up $2.23 from $4.94 in January 2010. Spring wheat other than durum averaged $7.69 per bushel, up $1.12 from $6.57 in December and up $2.39 from $5.30 in January 2010.

The average price paid for rough rice in January was $13.70 a cwt, up 90¢ from $12.80 in December but down $1.30 from $15 a year earlier.

The January index of prices received for food grains was 237 compared with the 1990-92 base of 100, up 12% from 212 the previous month and up 35% from 175 in January 2010.

The January index for feed grains was 226, up 12% from 202 in December and up 43% from 158 in January 2010. The average price paid to farmers for corn was $5.37 a bushel, up 55¢ from $4.82 in December and up $1.71 from $3.66 in January 2010. Farmers received an average of $9.89 a cwt for grain sorghum in January, up $1.10 from $8.79 in December and up $4.05 from $5.84 in January 2010. The average price paid for oats in January was $3.04 a bushel, up 8¢ from $2.96 in December and up 85¢ from $2.19 in January 2010.

The index of January prices received for oilseeds was 224, up 11% from 202 in December and up 29% from 174 in January 2010. Farmers received an average of $12.60 a bushel for soybeans in January, up $1 from $11.60 in December and up $2.81 from $9.79 in January 2010.

The January index for dairy products was 124, down 3% from 128 in December but up nearly 1% from 123 in January 2010. The average price paid to farmers for all milk in January was $16.20 a cwt, down 50¢ from $16.70 in December but up 10¢ from $16.10 in January 2010.

The poultry and egg index was 141, down 8% from 154 in December and down 6% from 150 in January 2010. The average price paid to farmers for all eggs in January was 85¢ a dozen, down 23¢ from $1.08 in December and down 18¢c from $1.03 in January 2010.
