Top Stories of 2016
It was another year of record grain harvests, ample supplies and low prices. Shocking election results – namely the vote by Britain to leave the European Union and the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president – reflected a growing surge in nationalism and protectionism that could have a significant impact on the global grain industry in years to come. Russia flexed its muscles as a wheat exporter and Turkey continued to dominate the world flour trade, which reached record heights.
Here is a look at some of the top stories that impacted the global grain and grain processing industries in 2016.
IAOM MEA 2016
For the first time, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Africa's unofficial capital, hosted the International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM) Mideast and Africa (MEA) Conference and Expo, Oct. 24-27, at Millennium Hall. The 27th rendition of the event, drew more than 500 participants from 46 countries for exchanges of market and technical information both in educational forums and on the trade show floor, which featured 92 exhibitors from 22 countries.
Highlights from the AACC International meeting
More than 1,000 individuals from industry, academia and government were at the American Association of Cereal Chemists International’s annual meeting held Oct. 23-26 at the Westin Hotel and Conference Center in Savannah, Georgia.
Oct. 8-11 in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S., the international industrial baking industry gathered for panels, networking, business opportunities and entertainment. This slideshow is a collection of booth photos from those in attendance.

Highlights from Bühler Networking Days
Around 750 leaders from industry and science took part in the Bühler Networking Days held Aug. 22-24 in Uzwil, Switzerland. During the three-day event, top speakers from both the industry and science fields engaged with Bühler experts and other participants – with the key question of how to feed nine billion people healthily and sustainably.
The IFT conference and expo from July 16-19 at the McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinos, U.S., brought together food industry professionals from all over the U.S. and abroad.
Sosland Purchasing Seminar 2016
The 39th Annual Sosland Publishing Purchasing Seminar kicked off June 5 with cocktails at the Sprint Festival Plaza in Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri, U.S. The event is designed for executives and managers who are involved with ingredient procurement, market analysis, risk assessment, supply chain management and corporate planning.
VICTAM Asia 2016
The photos are from the FIAAP, VICTAM & GRAPAS Asia 2016, held March 29-31 at the BITEC venue in Bangkok, Thailand. There were 223 exhibitors and co-exhibitors from 28 countries showing a wide range of products.
The photos are from 120th Annual IAOM Conference & Expo at the Hyatt Regency Columbus and the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio, U.S. on April 4-8.
The photos are from GEAPS Exchange 2016, its 87th International Technical Conference and Exposition that was held Feb. 27-March 1 in Austin, Texas, U.S. A total of 2,852 attendees from 28 countries attended the show, the third highest total in the history of the conference. It also set a new record for exhibitors with 412 in 250,000 square feet of space.
