IGP plans intro to flour milling course

MANHATTAN, KANSAS, U.S. — This marks the sixth year that Kansas State University’s (KSU) International Grains Program (IGP) will host its annual KSU Introduction to Flour Milling course from Jan. 13-17, 2014, at the IGP Conference Center in Manhattan, Kansas, U.S. 

The IGP faculty are excited to continue expanding the opportunities within the annual flour milling curriculum.

This course attracts a broad range of individuals to the program, said Mark Fowler, IGP associate director and milling specialist.

“This course is one of the more diverse in regards to their job responsibilities. Shift millers, miller assistants, quality assurance managers, general managers, technical service managers have all previously attended,” said Fowler. “The common thread for most of these participants is that they are new to the industry.”

Course participants will hear presentations from industry professionals, experience hands-on workshops and a high level of interaction between other participants and the professionals. Fowler along with other KSU faculty and industry professionals will be teaching most of the course.

Graduate of the 2013 course, Joe Vandenburg, business unit leader and continuous improvement manager for Modelez International in Canada, said he appreciated the opportunity to break down the milling process in order to catch up to the knowledge of his peers.

“Since it is my first year with the company I have a lot to learn about the milling industry and K-State has a great reputation,” Vandenberg said. “It was a great opportunity to learn more and improve my technical understanding for milling.”

Client human resources manager for Cargill/Horizon Milling, Michelle Anderson, also attended this course because she is new to the industry.

“I need to understand what happens in the mill so that I can provide my expertise as an HR manager, and understand the business and how that translates to the customers,” Anderson said.
