LONDON — Britain's Southern Counties Agricultural Trading Society Ltd. recently acquired the BDR agri-merchanting business and assets from ConAgra, Inc. for an undisclosed cash sum. SCATS said the purchase would double its grain trading activities. SCATS, which is the south of England's largest farmer-owned business, said the BDR purchase would expand its operations north through East Anglia, Lincolnshire and the Midlands. “The purchase of BDR will enable SCATS to achieve its strategy of becoming a national rather than a regional business,” said Tim Pollock, SCATS group managing director.

The company will handle around 1.5 million tonnes of grain and will be better positioned to meet the needs of farmer suppliers and grain customers in a competitive market, he added. BDR's seed and fertilizer business will be merged with SCATS' AgriProducts-UAP joint venture business, the company said.
