Technical papers, new products boost conference

The 13th annual conference and trade show of the Association of Operative Millers’ Middle East & East Africa District, Oct. 8-11 in Muscat, Oman, featured a range of interesting technical papers, a "What’s New?" session on new products and a trade show with suppliers from more than a dozen countries.

The papers presented in the technical sessions included "Wheat Protein and Flour Wheat Gluten correlation," Irfan Hashmi, National Flour Mills, U.A.E., "Wheat Outlook," Oga Venkat, Tradigrain; "Soy Flour Addition to Wheat Flour," James Jackobs, American Soybean Association; "Reducing Contamination in Wheat in the Cleaning Section," Walter Bruggman, Buhler AG; "Milling Innovations," Ziyade Amer, Ocrim; "MillTech 3.0 for Windows" and "Germ Separation in the Flour Mill", Henry Stevens, U.S. Wheat Associates; "Milling Wheat Developments in India," Bhure Lal, Food Corporation of India; "Solving Flour Quality Problems," Lutz Popper, Muhlenchemie; and "Color Sorters for Cleaning," Shamik Patel, Satake.

District delegates also elected new officers for 2001-2002. They include Essa Al-Ghurair, U.A.E., district director and conference vice-chairman; Andre Bega, Mauritius, conference chairman; Mohammed Mortazawi, Iran, treasurer; Tommy Mitsides, Cyprus, first executive committeeman; and Nicolas Tsikhlakis, Jordan, second executive committeeman.

Participants also voted on sites for the next two annual AOM District meetings. The 2002 meeting will be held in Mauritius on Oct. 20-22; the 2003 meeting will be held in Dubai, U.A.E.
