Technical conference, short course on fumigants planned in April

   INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, U.S. — Proposed phosphine label changes and alternatives to methyl bromide are among the topics to be presented at the 1999 Fumigants and Pheromones Technical Conference, April 19 and 20 at the University Place Hotel and Convention Center in Indianapolis.

   Ken Sheppard, Quaker Oats Co., Chicago, Illinois, will give the keynote address on April 19, “Life After Methyl Bromide.” Other speakers that day will include Bobby Corrigan, RMC Consulting, Richmond, Indiana, “Food Plant Inspections: What I Look For” and “Managing Birds and Rodents”; David K. Mueller, Insects Limited, Inc., Westfield, Indiana, “Alternatives to Methyl Bromide: A Period of Transition”; John Mueller, Fumigation Service and Supply, Inc., Westfield, “Proposed Phosphine Label Changes”; and Steven Pratt, Commonwealth Science and Industry Research Organization, Canberra, Australia, “Advanced Phosphine Monitoring.”

   Mr. Pratt will return on April 20 to speak on “Alternatives to Methyl Bromide from Australia.” Other speakers that day will include Alain Van Ryckeghem, Insects Limited, Inc., “New Developments in Monitoring Stored Product Insects”; Alan Dowdy, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Manhattan, Kansas, “Insect DNA Fingerprints/Spacial Mapping”; Curt Hale, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, “Food Borne Allergen: Peanuts, Peanuts and No Peanuts”; Mike Mullens, U.S.D.A. Agricultural Research Service, Manhattan, “Insect Resistant Packaging”; Livingston Clarke, Food Safety Management, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, “Heat Treatment in Food Plants and Other Canadian Success Stories”; and Larry Pierce, Food Protection Services, Mililani, Hawaii, “How to Set Up, Record, Interpret and Maintain a Pheromone Trapping Program.”

   A fumigation short course will be offered April 21 and 22 at the new training facility of Fumigation Service and Supply, Inc. and Insects Limited, Inc. in Westfield, Indiana.
