After two years of development, Sortex, Inc., a division of Buhler AG, is expanding its color sorter range to utilize optical technology. Using a technique called bichromatic sorting, simultaneous measurement of a wide spectrum of colors can be achieved, allowing for differentiation between similar color shades. The removal of sub-standard grains, traditionally done by hand, is crucial to product quality, and the automated Sortex 9000 improves speed and accuracy. Infrared sensors were added to remove difficult-to-see contaminants such as glass, stone or metal, even if they are the same visible color as the product.
