WASHINGTON D.C., U.S. — For the first time since the mid-80s, the National Academies’ National Research Council has revised its recommended nutrient guidelines for dogs and cats. The 450-page report by an international team of experts provides a comprehensive assessment of the daily nutrient and calorie requirements for dogs and cats.

The report includes a comprehensive discussion of pet-food additives and numerous tables detailing the composition of ingredients typically used in pet foods.

The report also establishes recommended allowances that take into account the ability of dogs and cats to absorb nutrients found in typical pet foods, and also considers nutrient needs based on physical activity level and life-stages.
