Long Co. closes lab, contract CII Laboratory Services

CII Laboratory Services has signed an exclusive agreement to supply laboratory analytical services to Long Company Bakery, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, U.S. The Long Company will close its chemistry laboratory before the end of the year.

"Our lab has a five-star rating and is one of the best in the country," said Bernard Forrest, Long Company president. "But usage and volume have dropped to the point where it is no longer an economical proposition."

The Long Company is an independent baker’s cooperative that provides technical services, purchasing, marketing, logistics, distribution and manufacturing and engineering assistance to its members.

Jim Apple, The Long Company’s chairman of the board of directors said, "This sound, economic move strengthens our organization and positions us for continued long-term commitment to serving our members in the best manner possible."

Procedures to transfer analytical laboratory work to CII will be established in the next two months, Forrest said. The cooperative’s laboratory services department will continue to conduct labeling and other technical services for Long members.

CII, located in Kansas City, Missouri, U.S., supplies a broad range of laboratory and export analytical services worldwide to both milling and baking industries. It also provides annual U.S. wheat crop quality surveys that evaluate flour quality for the U.S. Wheat Associates.
