KIEV, UKRAINE — Cargill, Inc. expects to open a sunflower seed processing plant in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine in March. The company estimated its investment in the new plant at about U.S.$50 million.

Cargill, a leading exporter of grain from the Ukraine, said the plant would be able to process 300,000 tonnes of sunflower seed annually, and is expected to crush 125,000 tonnes of sunflower seed in 2000.

Ukraine harvested 2.75 million tonnes of sunflower seed in 1999, compared with 2.26 million in 1998. The government's export forecast for the 1999/2000 season was cut to 200,000 tonnes from previous estimates of 700,000 tonnes.
